Bland Diet for Dogs

Bland Diet for Dogs

All dogs will get sick to their stomach from time to time, but there are some dogs that have a sensitive stomach and may require a special diet to help prevent stomach upset. If your pet has been sick, or has a sensitive stomach, then you may need to consider a bland diet. A bland diet for dogs is a great way to combat stomach issues. After all, many stomach issues arise from the types of food that you feed your pet. Think about it, when you are sick, do you want to go out and eat a hearty or spicy meal? Chances are, you wouldn’t. Your dog doesn’t want to either.

What is a Bland Diet for Dogs?

This is one of the first questions that may come to mind when you hear of a bland diet. The term bland diet can actually refer to a variety of different things, but typically, bland recipes will have only limited ingredients. To feed your dog a bland diet, you will not want to include foods that are spicy, as they can cause more aggravation to the stomach. Generally, bland foods have a mild flavor and a soft texture, making them easy to digest.

An Occasional Bland Diet

If your pet just has a random upset stomach from time to time, you need to keep them away from their regular food until their stomach settles. Instead of feeding them their normal kibble or diet, it is important to try a bland diet. Giving them regular food right after vomiting or diarrhea can only make matters worse. As long as your dog doesn’t have stomach sensitivities on a regular basis, then an occasional bland diet may be a good idea.

Feeding a Bland Diet Regularly

For dogs that have stomach sensitivities, it may be important to feed them a bland diet on a daily basis. Foods that contain certain ingredients and spices may cause upset to their stomach even further (learn more about spices and herbs for dogs here). It is important to keep an eye on your dog and understand the foods that are known allergens to them. That way, you can keep their diet free of these foods. If you want to feed a bland diet regularly, you will probably want to look for a recipe that will be easy for you to make.

If you want to try something a bit more gourmet, here is another recipe that includes more ingredients:

Ingredients:

To prepare, start by boiling the water in a medium sized pan. Add in the potatoes, rice and chicken. Once the rice and chicken are cooked thoroughly, add the other ingredients and simmer for a few minutes on low. Cool and serve.

Remember, if your dog is lactose intolerant, however, you will need to leave out the yogurt and cottage cheese. Sometimes, the simpler of the recipes is the best when it comes to an upset stomach.

As you can see, a bland diet for dogs may actually be a lifesaver. It will ultimately help to ease their stomach upset, and they will start to feel better. Just make sure that you are still getting them an adequate amount of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, making their diet complete and balanced.
