Can Dogs Eat Bread?

Can Dogs Eat Bread

Dogs have very specific nutritional needs, which is why they are often placed on diets of only select foods. Yet this doesn’t keep them from eating just about everything. Giving your dog treats from the table isn’t always a bad thing. However, you will need to know that some foods should be avoided because they will end up being harmful to your pet. So, can dogs eat bread? The short answer is, yes. But you will have to be cautious about the amounts you feed your dog, as well as the types of bread you chose to secretly pass under the table.

Is Bread Harmful to Dogs?

Just because bread may be a basic staple in human meals doesn’t mean this food is harmless to your dog. This is after all, the reason for dog food. Fortunately, nothing in white or wheat bread is considered poisonous. In fact, in small amounts, these types of bread are pretty much harmless. Bread can be a small snack for your dog, or even a sneaky way to feed them medications. Even eating an entire loaf of bread shouldn’t harm your dog aside from filling up on useless carbohydrates and perhaps giving them a stomach ache.

Can Dogs Eat Bread Dough?

The answer is No! While sandwich bread is pretty much harmless, the dough is a completely different story. If dough is made with live yeast and ingested, the warm environment in your dog’s stomach will only help the yeast multiply. The result is an expanding mass of dough in your dog’s stomach. The expanding stomach could decrease blood flow to the stomach wall and press on the diaphragm. Also, as yeast multiplies it produces alcohols. These can intoxicate your dog and cause problems with coordination, vomiting, and in extreme cases coma or seizures. No one wants that for their pet, and bread dough should be avoided at all costs. There are also some types of bread you will not want to feed your dog, even when they are fully cooked.

Harmful Breads You Cannot Feed Your Dog

Raisin Bread: Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure and death in dogs and should be completely avoided.

Onion and Garlic Bread: Onions, garlic, and the like are not healthy for your pet. Very small amounts may not harm your pet, but anything beyond that could damage red blood cells.

Banana Bread: Bananas are fine for your dog and probably banana bread, but other ingredients in this kind of bread may not be, especially nuts and chocolate chips. Be sure and avoid these toxins.

Oat and Nut Bread: Again, this depends on the ingredients. Some nuts to avoid include macadamia, almond, black walnuts, pecans, and pistachios. Some are toxic, others will just give your dog an upset stomach, and even some will be completely fine.

Moldy Bread: If you wouldn’t eat it, then you should probably not feed it to your dog. A wide variety of mold grows on bread and some could be toxic to your pet.

Are There Any Advantages to Feeding A Dog Bread?

So dogs can eat bread, but should they? Again, you can give your dog bread occasionally, but only a little bit. Wheat bread can actually be a good source of fiber for your dog. If a dog is bloated small pieces of wheat bread can ease the discomfort and help move things along in a pinch. However, there are other sources of fiber you can consider too, that might be healthier for your dog.

Can Dogs Eat Bread?

Yes, for the most part they can have white or wheat bread with little to no side effects. If your dog eats an entire loaf of bread while you were away, it is nothing to panic over. Your dog may be bloated, but other than that regular breads are fairly safe. However, this does not mean you should be regularly giving your dog a snack of rolls or French toast. Too much bread could make your dog overweight. Diet is directly linked to your dog’s well being, and dogs are known carnivores. They need protein to be the main ingredient in their food, not grains or carbs.

  1. I rarely bother feeding my dog any bread, but when I do it’s just scraps of bread left over. I remember hearing about moldy bread and food, but I never actually believed it was fine for dogs to eat. Anyways, I will feed my dog any scraps of bread if I don’t finish my food. And I will make sure not to feed them any of the harmful breads.
