Do Something Good – The Nuts and Bolts of Animal Shelter Volunteering

Animal Shelter Volunteering

Most pet lovers really have this desire to help the animals in their community. Let’s face it, pet lovers are unique. They have a love for all animals, not just their own. If you want to make a difference for the animals in your community, then you may want to consider animal shelter volunteering. There are so many reasons WHY people just like you choose to help out in local animal shelters. Here are a few of those reasons:

#1 – You Can Make a Difference

When you volunteer to help out an animal shelter, you really are making a big difference! There are so many animals out there without homes, and many more that have abusive homes. This is a huge problem that faces America today. By helping in local shelters, you can help raise the awareness for animal protection in your local community.

#2 – It Makes You Feel Good

When you help out animals, they show their unconditional love in return. Animals, dogs especially, are givers of unconditional love and loyalty. By comforting and helping an animal, they will show you that love. It really just makes you feel good inside.

#3 – They Need the Help

Shelters are often given little funding to help them with their community outreach for animals. That means that they have to depend on volunteers to keep their doors open. If people didn’t take their time out to volunteer or contribute, then chances are there would be far less resources in your area for animals in need.

Now that you know WHY you should consider animal shelter volunteering, it is time to learn how you can get started. Here are a few easy steps that will help you to become an animal shelter volunteer in your local community:

#1 – Find a Shelter In Your Area

The first thing that you will want to do is find an animal shelter in your local area. There are many databases out there, including Petfinder, that will allow you to search for shelters. Many of these sites also allow you to see if there are pets that are for adoption. Once you find shelters in the area, jot down their phone number.

#2 – Make Some Calls

Next, you will want to make a few phone calls to the shelters in your area. When you call, you should ask to speak to someone that coordinates volunteer work. Start by introducing yourself and letting them know that you are willing to volunteer. Ask questions, and get to know how they operate.

#3 – Visit the Shelter

Once you call around, you will then want to go in for a visit to the shelter. Some shelters may prefer you to make an appointment, but many of them love getting volunteers, even if they just walk in to inquire. They will likely take you on a tour of the shelter, and let you get familiar with how things work.

If you really want to volunteer, chances are they will be able to find something that you can help them do. Some of the things that you can do may be obvious, such as cleaning up after animals or taking them for a walk, but there are many more opportunities. Here are a few of the things that you may not have thought about:
