Pet Adoption Websites

Most Popular Pet Adoption Websites

There are literally millions of pets that are looking to be adopted right now. Before we take a look at a few of the most popular pet adoption websites, first we are going to give you 2 reasons why you should adopt a pet. If you are still not sure why you should get a new pet for your family, then you definitely want to keep reading.

One of the biggest benefits of adopting a pet is the fact that you will ultimately save a life! In fact, there are around 2.7 million adoptable pets that are euthanized every year. There is simply not enough room in the shelters, and the ones that don’t get adopted are generally put down. By adopting a pet, you will save them.

Another benefit that comes with adopting a pet is that you can ultimately save money. When you buy a pet from a pet store or a breeder, you will pay more for them. Typically, the pets that are adopted are also already vaccinated, spayed or neutered, which will save you more money in the long run.

These are just two of the main reasons that people choose to adopt rather than go through a pet store or breeder. If you can change the life of just one pup, why wouldn’t you want to do it? Now that you know why you should adopt, it is time to take a look at some of the most popular pet adoption websites. Many of these sites will allow you to search for particular dogs based on breed, geographical location, or other terms.

Most Popular Pet Adoption Websites

Adopt-a-Pet-Logo#1 – Adopt-a-Pet.com

Adopt-a-Pet.com is likely one of the most popular pet adoptions websites out there. People really like it because it is easy to navigate. You go to the site, choose your location, specify any breed, gender, age, color and size preferences you may have, then click search. It will bring up a list of available pets to adopt that meet your search criteria. Adopt-a-Pet.com is funded in part by Purina, Bayer, and the North Shore Animal League America.

PetFinder-Logo#2 – Petfinder.com

Petfinder.com is another popular site. It also allows you to search based on your location, type of pet, breed, age and gender. They have over 345,770 adoptable pets. Their overall mission is to increase the awareness of the fact that there is a high availability for adoptable pets, and also eliminate euthanasia of pets in the United States. Their site is updated on a daily basis, and you can always be notified when a new pet becomes available.

Petango-Logo#3 – Petango.com

Petango.com’s main focus is to find pets a forever home. They offer an adoptable search service that is updated in real-time. They partner with many of the animal welfare organizations across the country, so you can rest assured that you are adopting a pet that truly is in dire need of a home. With their advanced search option, you can search based on type of pet, location, breed, gender, age, size and color. You can also look for pets that have a photo or video. You can also look for shelters in your area, or sign up to use their “Petmatch service”, which matches you with your ‘Perfect Petmatch’.  Many happy pets have found a home through Petango.

Rescue-Me-Logo#4 – RescueMe.org

RescueMe.org allows you to either find a home for an animal, or view the animals that are available for adoption. They not only have domestic animals like dogs and cats, but they also have more exotic animals including horses, rabbits, rodents, reptiles and amphibians, birds, wildlife and farm animals! You can select the type of animal and look for a particular breed. Over 200,000 pets that have been posted on “Rescue Me!” have been adopted. That is great news for our four legged friends.

Paws-Logo#5 – PAWS.org

PAWS.org is always a great place to turn to if you are looking for a new pet for your family. They are not only looking for people to adopt pets, but they are also looking for people that are willing to open their homes as a foster family to a pet until they were able to find them a forever home. To get to their adoption site, go to www.paws.org/cats-and-dogs/adopt. Here, you will be able to take a look at the dogs that are available in your areas. They also have adoption advisors that will help to pair you up with the perfect pet for your household and personality!

ASPCA-Logo#6 – ASPCA.org

To see what animals the ASPCA has for adoption, go to www.aspca.org/adopt. Here, you will be able to see the ASPCA Pet of the Week, and you will also be able to take a look at adoptable animals. Adopting from the ASPCA is convenient for people that live near New York City, but they also have an option that will let you search for dogs and cats in your local shelter. You can also use their Meet Your Match program to help you find your perfect match for a pet. They also have a plethora of information that will help guide you throughout the adoption process, and resources to help ensure it is right for you.

Best-Friends-Animal-Society-Logo#7 – Bestfriends.org

BestFriends.org is another site that is on a ‘no kill’ mission. When you go to their site, you will see an option to Adopt, and you will click on ‘Find a Best Friend’. From there, you will be able to look at the animals that they have available in their sanctuary, which is located in Utah. They also have a link that will allow you to adopt a pet near you. This is a lot like how the ASPCA works. They have their own shelter, but they also have resources to help you find local adoptable pets.

The-Shelter-Pet-Project-Logo#8 – TheShelterPetProject.org

The Shelter Pet Project was started back in 2009, and their goal was to raise awareness about adoptable pets. We definitely think that they were successful. Through their site, you can now search for a pet in your area, find a shelter, or learn more about how pet adoption works. They have a neat interactive tool that allows you to meet their pets and ‘interact’ with them using their “Meet a Pet” tool. Let them help you find a new furry friend for your family!

PetSmart-Logo#9 – Petsmart.com

Petsmart has locations all over the United States. While they usually have some pets available for adoption within their stores, they also have an online tool that allows you to search for adoptable pets in your area. By going to pets.petsmart.com/adoptions/ you will be able to find pets in your local Petsmart location, or you can use their “Pet Locator tool” to help you find adoptable pets online. This is powered through Petsmart Charities.

Dogster-Logo#10 – Dogster.com

Another great site is Dogster.com. Dogster is really focused on all things dog related, but they do have an adoption tab that will help you to find local dogs for adoption. To get straight to their adoption page, simply go to www.dogster.com/dog-adoption. There, you can search by breed, size, age, gender and location. You will also be able to see highlights of pictures of dogs that are available in your area.

The following two tabs change content below.

I've been a dog lover since the day I was born but it's the current four legged love of my life, Phoebe who inspired me to create the Munch.Zone.

We moved together from Israel to New York in 2013, love hiking together, and never pass up a trip to the dog park. Watching her over the years sparked so many questions about dog behavior and health needs, and it wasn't always easy to find answers. Thus, the Munch.Zone was born.

On any given day you'll find me watching Netflix originals, eating popcorn, and thinking about how to get into house flipping.

We took advantage of Petfinder.com, and that is how we met our baby girl, Sassi! She is just the perfect addition to our family, and you are sure to find your perfect pet match as well!

  2. Our family’s choice to adopt a dog from the ASPCA was one of the best decisions we have ever made. Ranger was rescued from a bad situation, and now he is one loved pup!
